“Politik im Freien Theater”: REICH
Evaluation of the 10th theatre festival of the Federal Agency for Civic Education Germany
EDUCULT evaluates the 10th theatre festival “Politik im Freien Theater” (politics in the independent theatre) which takes place in Munich from the 1st to the 11th of November on the topic “REICH” (rich).
The aim of the evaluation is to analyse processes and the structural quality of the festival. There is a special focus on the collaboration between festival partners. Also, the attainment of objectives is being monitored as well as its relevance for civic education.
The main objective of the accompanying research is to analyse how liberal arts can contribute to the critical thinking of society and especially to one’s positioning. Further, it elaborates to what extent and how theatre can position itself in the field of civic education.
Methods
Data is gathered through a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods. However, qualitative methods are in the centre of the analysis. Concrete methods are designed based on a first document analysis.
The following methods are used:
- Qualitative interviews with various actors (festival partners, jury members, theatre-makers, representatives of theatre pedagogy and public relations, etc.)
- Participatory observations of events
- Focus groups with adolescent and students
- Visitor surveys
Based on the data gathered through the empirical research, there will be a triangulating analysis which allows the evaluation questions to be answered and a set of recommendations to be compiled that help to understand the issue better as well as to develop the festival further.
