Salon of Cultures – “In and Out Culture. And in between?”
To make matters more complicated, there is a strict separation between domestic and foreign responsibility at the level of cultural policy. The recent integration of foreign culture and integration policy at the Austrian Foreign Office seems to have only changed slightly. At all political levels, an international orientation is no longer indispensable on account of changes in demographic composition. Vienna is recognized as a cultural center and is an outstanding example of internationality in urban and rural culture policy.
Within the context of a “Salon of Cultures,” we hope to exchange ideas with artists, institutions, academics, and cultural policy-makers about the state of the interaction between domestic and foreign culture. We would like to talk about the emergence and disappearance of borders, the added value and the challenges of transnational projects and programs, and about trans-cultural cooperation. This raises questions about the extent to which a new quality of cultural policy cooperation could come over time and what it might look like: How can international cultural exchange and national cultural promotion be considered? Where does this happen in practice? What is known about research and where does the potential for networking exist?
