PISA Complementary Survey

CURRENT

What pupils perceive as culture has little to do with their lives. This is one of the major results of our analysis on "How students perceive and use cultural offerings". The whole text is part of the complementary PISA surveys in Austria which have now been published in a comprehensive volume (in German) at Waxmann.

PISA Complementary Survey

How students perceive and use cultural offerings

Abstract

Critics of PISA studies stress the emergence of an education system that focuses only on key lesson which are comparable internationally without large effort.

However there are some possibilities to extend the PISA evaluation system to arts education.

In 2009 EDUCULT was assigned a study by BIFIE Salzburg to evaluate pupil´s participation in arts and cultural education.

Keynotes of the questionnaire are:

  • defining the term “art” and “culture” by pupils
  • cultural activities in, and out of school
  • acceptance of provision of cultural activities
  • barriers to participate

Approach

During the PISA survey in 2009 the questionnaire was filled out by 1562 pupils between the age of 15 and 16 from 150 different schools.
