Vienna Club Commission: Safety in Vienna’s Nightlife

How can safety in Vienna’s nightlife be strengthened collectively? As part of an initiative by the Vienna Club Commission (VCC), perspectives from the club and events scene were brought together to make experiences, perceptions, and needs visible.

The questions developed by the focus group “Safer Party – Safer Nightlife” formed the thematic basis of the survey. Building on this, we developed an online questionnaire and distributed it widely across Vienna’s club and events scene. More than 2,200 people participated, creating a diverse and robust data foundation for further steps. Together with stakeholders from club culture, public administration, and civil society, we analysed and interpreted the data in order to identify concrete starting points for greater safety and participation in nightlife.

The findings were presented to the public for the first time at a joint press conference with the Vienna Club Commission and further representatives of the scene, held as part of Waves Vienna – Festival and Conference, and were introduced into professional public discourse. The survey painted a nuanced picture of the current situation and opened up space for co-creative strategies around “Safer Nightlife”. On this basis, concrete tools and recommendations were developed to support clubs, event organisers, and audiences in sharing responsibility and shaping an inclusive, safe nightlife.
