Sustainability versus Resilience – About the Role of Arts Education in the Hopes for Sustainable Development

“Even in the camp of those believing in continual progress, one begins to understand that chaos is the rule of which the order is the most unlikely of the exceptions.” (Peter Sloterdijk)

In 2015, heads of state, government leaders, UN high level representatives and civil society adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in total. They reach from fighting hunger and poverty to equality and partnerships. As up to now cultural development is not mentioned explicitly, the newly established European Network on Arts Education Research ENO, which is based on a number of UNESCO observatories throughout the world, recently met in Porto/Portugal and discussed if and in which way arts education can contribute to the idea of global sustainable development.

See more at: https://educult.at/blog/das-publikum-das-unbekannte-wesen/#sthash.evMZgrIu.dpuf

Altern

Thoughts on the publication of a new European Commission study on Audience Development

Recently during a rehearsal in the Burgtheater a stressed, young director burst out: “I hate the audience.” And far and wide, no one had opposed this. Quite obviously this young hopeful, with his aggression against those for whom he produces art, is not standing alone.Perhaps my fallacy already lies in the attribution of how a theater producer like him would make theater for somebody. It is much more likely that this counterpart does not even exist in his imagination (or, at best, in the form of a few selected critics). Rather he is concerned with the art itself, which would have to stand on its own, and for whose production, spectators are regarded as bothersome, at best.

We all have to return to Reims or why otherwise the right-wing can succeed

There is a black & white photograph of me as a ten year old boy. I stand with my grandparents in front of their shared-garden plot shed on the outskirts of Vienna. The photography captures their poor living conditions. My grandparents first met in Vienna as so-called "Bettgeher”. They came from small villages in Upper Austria and Burgenland to work in the Austrian capital. Their weekly wages couldn’t cover rent for a private room, so they had to share a bed with other young professionals – one slept there during the day, the other at night. Later they were able to rent their own apartment, but it was destroyed during the Second World War. So they moved to an shared-garden plot area, where they stayed until their death. For me their garden was a special place of love and security; I participated in my grandparent’s strictly regulated daily routine and helped with the gardening work, but it was also a place of comfort and celebration (…)

Arts Education in times of socio-political upheaval

This text was produced in a state of shock. The results of the British referendum had just been announced: a majority of the population voted in favour of leaving the European Union. This signifies the greatest change in the co-existence of countries in Europe since the fall of the Iron Curtain; the consequences of which can’t immediately be estimated in its entirety. In any case, it is a slap in the face for an elite project, which has proven largely incapable of solving the central problems of increasing parts of the national populations. Its decision makers have condoned the impoverishment of entire countries, mass unemployment and also lack of perspective and prospects, particularly among young people.

The evaluation’s goal is to gather data on the effect of the program and support future development. In June 2016 EDUCULT conducted round tables with cultural educators and pedagogues during a network meeting in Berlin.

New Publication: Cultural policy in the time of creative industries

NESTA is is an innovation charity with a mission to help people and organisations bring great ideas to life. The organisation has published in June a very provocative document focusing on Cultural policy in the time of the creative industries. This paper argues that new statistics of the Department for Culture, Media and Sports on the cultural sector alongside the creative industries estimates will create an important opportunity to revisit the scope of cultural policy in the UK. One key argument: By clarifying the distinctions between culture and creative industries, the DCMS will open the way for more effective cultural and economy policy (the latter being what creative industries policy will properly be seen to be).

Down with this culture! Long live the arts!

The political landscape is fundamentally changing. More and more countries are facing challenges connected to right-wing-activism. In many different countries, be it France, Italy, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland or Austria, nationalist right-wing parties gain influence. They all reject the political project called Europe and strive to restrict civil rights.

University to unlearn

A few days ago, my daughter took the enrolment test at the University of Vienna. Her report reminded me of the impressions I got from watching Erwin Wagenhofer’s documentary “Alphabet” on the handling of pupils in a mass education camp somewhere in China. The private company hired by the University of Vienna applied military-style organization, meaning that the applicants had to line up and follow detailed rules on the dress code and the use of writing devices. Everything seemed to follow a standardized procedure: the explanation on how to fill in the multiple choice test took about an hour, leaving the premises (a hall usually used for exhibitions) was impossible due to locked doors. Eventually, fewer applicants than expected turned up and everyone (except for one guy who was too dilettantish in cheating) got the study permission.
