The case of Venezuela – on the political and musical perspective
There were not many media reports on the fact that the US is denying the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduras the right to fly across the States on his way to China and that his participation in the UN General Assembly in New York is on stake. The reason is most likely the on-going anger at Edward Snowdon’s attempt to receive asylum in Venezuela as a political adversary of the US.

Why arts education has to deal with the European crisis
This was the mission statement of the second “World Summit on Arts Education – Polylogue II” that took place in May 2013 in Wildbad Kreuth/Bavaria. Representatives of more than 40 countries gathered in the idyllic Bavarian Alps to discuss questions on “evaluation”, “mapping” and “competences”. Many contributions were characterised by the desire to somehow demonstrate the added value of arts education to foster competences in a wider social and economic context. Again, the case was made for creativity and innovation as instrumental to overcome the crisis.

An online project platform will be launched soon to enable stakeholders to contribute and share their experience.

OECD report: “Art for Art’s Sake? – The Impact of Arts Education”
Arts education is often said to be a means of developing critical and creative thinking. Arts education has also been argued to enhance performance in non-arts academic subjects such as mathematics, science, reading and writing, and to strengthen students’ academic motivation, self-confidence, and ability to communicate and co-operate effectively. This report examines the state of empirical knowledge about the impact of arts education on these kinds of outcomes.

Or: Why it is getting harder to generate interest in “culture and development” – even among the ones that are interested in arts and culture
A few days ago I was invited to a workshop on „Culture work in an international context“ at the University of Music and Performing Arts/Institute for Cultural Management and Cultural Theory (IKM). A few students and almost as many speakers were present. Again (just as on the conference on Cultural Diplomacy in November 2012 ), the impression emerged that the interest in reflecting on international cultural projects is limited.

Outland, the arts and social change
The holiday season is over, and back on our office desks we are trying to get organized. Some travel experiences however are lasting and make me reflect upon questions and insights I cannot forget and do not want to forget.
A contract of EDUCULT with the Open Society Foundations (OSF) by financial investor George Soros has brought me to Central Asia – a part of the world, I have to admit it self-ashamedly, I have hardly ever noticed before. Our task was the evaluation of the Arts & Culture Program of OSF. By this, we had the chance to talk to a number of artists and learned what it means to create art in this region and to invite local people to engage with the arts.

A new Renaissance is possible
Or: Why it takes so long until the knowledge of Lukrez enters our education system
Recently I came across the book “The Swerve: How the World Became Modern”. In this book, Stephen Greenblatt, Professor of English and American Literature and Language at Harvard University and author of a fascinating Shakespeare biography describes the discovery of the final copy of an ancient manuscript titled “de rerum natura” written by Lukrez. According to Greenblatt’s research, the secretary of Pope John Paul XXIII, Poggio Bracciolini, embarked on a dangerous journey to southern Germany in 1417 after the Pope’s discharge in Constance, where he discovers the final copy of the manuscript in an abbey.
What was extraordinary about this discovery was not only that a manuscript hidden for centuries behind thick abbey walls became accessible to the medieval world. It was also the explosive message of the manuscript, challenging the theocratic world order of the early 15th century and thus sustainably shaking the strict God-given societal hierarchy.

Europe: to be cultural or not be
Why the ministers of finance and economics alone will not save Europe and why we should take education and culture into account to develop new perspectives for Europe
The political scientist Anton Pelinka stated in the context of the presentation of his book Europa – Ein Plädoyer that Europe is a “brainchild” and has not yet arrived in the “belly of the Europeans”,
One tends to agree if only there was not the level of aggression and wrath of a growing part of the population. The contempt of what people perceive as Europe has indeed reached the “belly”. These fierce emotions are grist to the mills of the nationalists.

WIMMERS´ QUATERLY
And still, we celebrate Christmas or: “2011 was a good year for Europe. 2012 must be even better.”
Recently, the Austrian Institute for Youth Research presented its latest survey “Youth and zeitgeist”. According to the survey, young Austrians are pretty much “pragmatic egocentrics”. They distance themselves from any ideological statements; their position on social issues is limited to the topics that directly affect them. The differences between male and female youngsters are quite striking.
