Research and Studies

For us, research means shaping the future together. Our studies combine methodologically robust survey designs with societal relevance. As an independent institute, we work transparently and accurately, providing perspectives that are equally valuable for practitioners and decision-makers.

We have particular expertise in participatory and co-creative research, especially with children and young people. For this reason, we work closely with participants and act in accordance with clear research ethics principles, for example through our child protection framework and our AI strategy.

Our research is discrimination-sensitive and reflexive: we critically question existing power structures, incorporate diverse life experiences, and reflect on our own roles. In doing so, we pursue the goal of breaking down barriers and generating insights that contribute to social change. Through teaching activities carried out by our management and other team members at universities and higher education institutions, we bring insights into academic practice and integrate new impulses to flow back into our projects.

Forms

Participatory Research:

We conduct participatory research in close collaboration with participants and stakeholders. This results in practical findings with a high level of acceptance.

Comparative Research:

We systematically analyse different contexts, approaches, and practical examples in order to make transferable knowledge accessible.

Literature studies:

We prepare existing findings in a structured manner and evaluate the quality and reliability of available scientific results. Where sufficient data exists, this provides a sound basis for decision-making.

Benchmarking:

We orient ourselves towards established standards and best practices. This creates comparability and clear quality benchmarks.

European and National Research Collaboration:

We conduct research within strong networks, such as EU research programmes (HORIZON), consortia operating under framework agreements with the European Commission, and national research networks.

Methods

We work with qualitative and quantitative methods, ranging from interviews, focus groups, and participant observation to surveys, document analyses, and comprehensive mixed-methods approaches.

Our team also has experience in phenomenological vignette research, grounded theorising/situational analysis, as well as creative, participatory methods. The choice of methods is guided by the project’s questions and objectives and is jointly determined during the process.

Study & Tool development

SEEDS

SEEDS contributes to strengthening the understanding of security policy, sovereignty, neutrality and democratic values through civic education. We carry out needs assessments and provide teachers with a practical toolkit that enables them to deliver age-appropriate content and strengthen democratic resilience in Austrian schools.

Study & Model Development

SoPHIA

SoPHIA is a Horizon 2020 project that developed a holistic impact assessment model for interventions at European cultural heritage sites. Through the findings we developed in collaboration with our partners, we demonstrated how such interventions work and what criteria determine their quality.
