Programme
14:30 BETWEEN CONFRONTATION AND EMPATHY – Bridging via Arts Education
Open Space Arts and Cultural Education for Children
Keynotes: Yvette Hardie (President ASSITEJ International), Aron Weigl (EDUCULT)
Place: Arena21, MQW
Arts education connects the arts with the people. It reaches into various areas of society and is thus directly affected by social changes. The current decline in social cohesion and mutual trust in our communities also poses special challenges for arts education – across all artistic disciplines. Arts education becomes a space for confrontation.
Within the framework of the Open Space, we will discuss the consequences of current social developments for children and what this means for arts education for children. It is precisely this area that, in addition to the main addressees, the children, integrates various groups such as parents, educators, artists, etc., and thus must also take into account their different attitudes and approaches.
But where are the boundaries between empathy and self-censorship? What instruments and methods exist to be able to work empathically? And is arts education as artistic co-creation a way not only to bring people of different social groups together, but also to initiate collective critical reflection? In the interdisciplinary exchange between arts educators we want to identify problem areas and develop solutions.

Participation in cultural and artistic life is a children’s right. Responsibility for arts education is becoming an ever greater challenge. How can access to arts and culture be secured for all young people in Austria? What are the current developments and challenges in the field of arts and culture for children? What long-term strategies are needed? Which international networks and impulses are relevant for the future? And the most important question: What is this important development worth to us every day? What do we, as those being responsible for it, do?
On the podium, leading persons from cultural policy, research and practice will discuss cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional questions and visions.
